In his first year as a NFL head coach Pat Shurmur failed Miserably as the Cleveland Browns Offensive coordinator. The one mistake Mike Holmgren made when he hired Pat Shurmur and Dick Jauron was letting Shurmur become the Browns offensive coordinator. Shurmur never was at the helm of an NFL team as the head coach. He was a quarterbacks coach that’s it. How could Holmgren expect Pat Shurmur to take over as head coach and then saddle him with the offensive coordinator position too.
Shurmur was fortunate the Browns played good defense for most of the season. If the Browns defense played as poorly as the Cleveland offense Shurmurs Browns would have been completely blown out this year. Just look at today’s performance from Shurmurs offensive unit. Shurmur had Seneca Wallace throw the ball 41 times. Wallace only completed 16 passes for 177 yards. Are you kidding me? What the heck was Shurmur thinking?
Why would he have Wallace throw the ball 41 times. Shurmur had Peyton Hillis doing nothing most of the game. When Hillis ran the ball he gained yards. I know of two runs Hillis had today for over 8 yards per carry. Yet Shurmur decided to stick to incomplete passes from Wallace. It is clear Shurmur let his Browns offense become far to predictable. Sure Hillis hurt his knee but that was later in the game. Shurmur knew Hillis has been producing the last two weeks and he still tried to come out throwing the football in 50 M.P.H. wind gusts with a backup quarterback who use to be a wide receiver.
Shurmur’s offensive play calling is full of bad decisions. Pat Shurmur had the 29th ranked offense in the NFL coming into the Steelers game today. There were only three teams with worse offensive numbers than Shurmur’s Cleveland Browns. The Colts, The Rams who beat Shurmurs Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Browns President Mike Holmgren made the statement earlier in the season the Cleveland Browns would be hiring an offensive coordinator for the next season. The problem I see is letting Shurmur continue to call the plays.
First off what quality coordinator is going to want to come to Cleveland and let Pat Shurmur continue to call the plays. Kind of counter productive don’t ya think? Shurmur lacks the imagination at least so far to be an efficient offensive coordinator, at least at this point in his head coaching career. What is going to change over one off season? Like the title says Shurmur failed Miserably. Lets not have a repeat. The Cleveland Fans deserve better.
